Tigers update

Under new manager Jim Leyland, the Tigers have been a big surprise. They are 20-12, good enough for second place in the American League Central behind the Chicago White Sox, despite losing three of their past four games. The Tigers have relied heavily on their pitching, which leads the AL with a 3.38 ERA. First baseman Chris Shelton, whose fast start was the talk of baseball, has cooled considerably since hitting .326 with 10 homers and 20 RBIs in April. Shelton is 3-for-23 this month and has only one homer and four RBIs in his past 19 games. Dogged by injuries the past couple of seasons, outfielder Magglio Ordonez has picked up the offensive slack, with a homer in three straight games. Detroit won last season's Orioles series, five games to three.
