Providence tops Mount for crown



The Providence men's lacrosse team went on a 4-0 run in the final 8:52 to rally past Mount St. Mary's, 8-6, in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship game yesterday in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Friars (10-6) captured the title for the second time in three years. They also won in 2004.

The Mount (7-9) led most of the game, jumping out to a 3-0 lead after the first quarter and 3-2 at the half.

Providence tied the game at 3 on Devin McBride's goal with 10:42 left in the third quarter. Mount St. Mary's scored three of the next four goals, including Eric Seifert's second goal of the game with 10:28 remaining.

The Friars' Mark Seyer scored two of his three goals during the 4-0 run.

Providence held the Mount scoreless for a period of 32:11 from the middle of the first quarter to the middle of the third.

Seifert and Tilghman Herring (St. Mary's) both finished with two goals for Mount St. Mary's.

Gettysburg 8, Washington College 4 -- Evan Gallant (Loyola) and Brian Pryor each netted a hat trick to lift the host Bullets (16-1) over the Shoremen (13-4) in the Centennial Conference championship game. The win secures an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament, which begins Wednesday.

CCBC-Essex 7, Howard CC 5 -- Kolby Rubeling (Boys' Latin) had a hat trick as the Knights (10-7) beat the Dragons (11-3) in the Region XX Tournament final. CCBC-Essex advances to the NJCAA Nationals in Garden City, N.Y. next weekend.


No. 3 Duke 6, Dartmouth 4 -- Katie Chrest had a game-high three goals and Megan Huether made 13 saves, and the two Maryvale grads powered the Blue Devils (16-2) past the Big Green (11-5).
