Multifamily yard sale being held today, rain or shine

The National Council of Jewish Women, Howard County section, is holding a multifamily yard sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. today, rain or shine, at 5005 Straight Star Place, off Harpers Farm Road.

Furniture, new jewelry, household items, art, books, new baby items, adult clothing and other items will be for sale. Proceeds will help support local charitable activities that address the needs of women, children and the elderly.

Family support group is to meet Tuesday

The Howard County chapter of NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, will hold a meeting of its family support group at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Harmony Hall Retirement Community, 6336 Cedar Lane.

The group provides information and support to families and friends of people affected by mental illness. Admission is free, and those who attend need not be members of NAMI.

Learn to prepare gourmet appetizers

The Wilde Lake Community Association will sponsor "Appetizers and More!" -- a course on making gourmet appetizers for youth ages 15 and older and adults. Presenting the course will be professional chefs from First Course: The Educaterers. Featured cuisine is Italian, Middle Eastern, Thai and Indian and includes meat, seafood and vegetarian items.

The class will be held from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Thursday at Slayton House in Wilde Lake Village Green. The cost is $50. Food and equipment will be provided.Registration is required as soon as possible.

Legal assistance set at Bain Center

Attorney Charles Jerome Ware will be at the Bain Center, 5470 Ruth Keeton Way, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. May 17 for the 60 Plus Wills and Legal Screening Program.

Services to be offered include drawing up simple wills, powers of attorney, living wills, small estates and deed changes. The program is open to Howard County residents ages 60 and older. The cost of preparing the documents is on a sliding scale. An appointment is required.

The program, which is sponsored by the Howard County Department of Citizen Services' Office on Aging, is available on the third Wednesday of each month.

Graduates -- Airman Cory E. Straub, son of Kathy Straub of Enola, Pa., and nephew of Annette Davis of Town Center, has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio. He is a 2005 graduate of East Pennsboro High School in Enola.

Cooking, nutrition -- Wilde Lake Community Association will offer a cooking and nutrition class for children, "Culinary Kids," from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday. Children ages 4 and 5 will learn to prepare nutritious treats. The course is intended to build a foundation of healthy habits. The cost is $22. Columbia lien-payers can request a 10 percent discount. Atholton -- Atholton High School will be host for a yard sale from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday to benefit the classes of 2008 and 2009. The event will be held on the school parking lot. Taste Wilde Lake -- Wilde Lake Community Association will hold "Taste of Wilde Lake" from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday in Wilde Lake Village Center. Free food and lemonade, balloon animals, a craft show, face painting, belly-dancing and other dance demonstrations, fencing, and a gelatin-eating contest are planned. For Mother's Day, photos will be taken with a giant red rose from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Crafts will be for sale, starting at noon. Volunteers are needed for the event, which is sponsored by Wilde Lake Community Association and Wilde Lake merchants. Admission to the event is free. 410-730-3987.
