A 19-year-old woman was raped by an unknown man as she walked on a path in the Village of Long Reach in Columbia on Thursday evening, Howard County police said yesterday.

Police said the woman was walking along the trail near Majors Lane about 5 p.m. when she was approached from behind.

Police said the suspect asked the victim for sex and when she refused, picked her up and carried her into the woods, where she was raped.

In 2005, Howard County had 42 reported rapes, two more than in 2004.
