A senior at Southern High School in Anne Arundel County was killed Thursday when she lost control of her car in Lothian and struck a truck, police said.

Sasha Crystal Ruiz, 18, was driving a 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier convertible on Mount Zion Marlboro Road about 10:30 a.m. when she missed a curve in the southbound lane and crossed into the northbound lane, county police said.

The Cavalier struck a flatbed truck being driven by Brian Eugene McKinney, 45, of Union Bridge in Carroll County. Excessive speed was a factor, police said.

Ruiz, of Lothian, was pronounced dead at 11 a.m. at Anne Arundel Medical Center, police said.

A passenger in the Cavalier, Shantel Jones, 15, of Dunkirk suffered multiple injuries, police said, and was taken by helicopter to Prince George's County Shock Trauma Center in Cheverly. Her condition was not available yesterday. McKinney had minor injuries and was treated and released, police said.

"She really lit up the room and was always completely positive," said Michael Bell, who taught studio art to Ruiz at Southern High. "She stood out because of her knowledge of art history. She had so much potential."
