A member of a road construction crew removing orange traffic warning barrels was critically injured yesterday afternoon when he was struck by a school bus on Third Avenue in Sykesville, state police reported.

Gary F. Rucker, 40, of Trevanion Road in Taneytown, was working on the shoulder of Third Avenue about 2:30 p.m. and moving barrels from the westbound lane to open it to traffic when the eastbound 1999 International school bus crossed the center line, entered the westbound lane and struck him, police reported.

The bus was heading for Sykesville Middle School to pick up children, with only the driver, Amos E. Ashe, 79, of Westminster, and an aide aboard, police said.

Rucker was flown to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center and was reported in critical condition.
