Benson gives O's another reprieve

Club's slump-stopper does it again, foiling Blue Jays to end O's three-game skid

Their bullpen has performed miserably and their lineup has been ravaged by injuries. But the two times this season, when it has appeared that the Orioles might be on the verge of crashing under the weight of a extended losing streak, they've handed Kris Benson the ball and watched him perform like a staff ace.

To the casual observer, what Benson does, the way he keeps hitters off balance and the way his pitches tend to avoid the barrel of a powerfully swung bat, is hardly artistic. His effectiveness, however, cannot be argued.
