GIRLS

STATS -- Although only a freshman, Tamicka Smithson has emerged as a versatile runner in cross country and indoor and outdoor track. She runs everything from the 200 meters to two miles, but 400 meters is her best event.

SIDELINES -- Smithson plans to become a pediatrician and carries a 95.5 academic average. She has received a certificate of merit from first lady Laura Bush for her academic excellence and already has earned a $1,000 Dr. Ben Carson Scholarship. As freshman class president, she helps plan class activities and trips. She also serves on the youth council at her YMCA branch, helping with after-school programs. Smithson sings in her church choir and was a member of a step team in middle school.
