May 02, 2006

Robert Alan Johnson, a retired Social Security Administration employee, died of lung cancer April 24 at Stella Maris Hospice in Timonium. He was 69.

Mr. Johnson was born in Baltimore and raised in Catonsville and Oella, where his family owned and operated the Corner Store, a convenience store.

He was a 1954 graduate of Mount St. Joseph High School in Irvington and earned an associate's degree in 1970 from Catonsville Community College.

Mr. Johnson retired in 2003 from the SSA's Woodlawn headquarters, where he had worked for 43 years as a claims adjuster.

He had served in the 121st Engineers of the Maryland National Guard.

"The Knights of Columbus was his life," said his wife of 47 years, the former Patricia Ann Reedy.

Mr. Johnson had served as financial secretary of the Patapsco Council of the Knights of Columbus and also arranged its fundraising bus trips.

He enjoyed making and giving away rosaries, family members said.

Since 1999, the former Catonsville resident had lived in Woodstock, Howard County.

He was an active communicant and lector at St. Alphonsus Roman Catholic Church in Woodstock, where a funeral Mass was offered Friday.

Also surviving are two sons, Robert A. Johnson Jr. of Orlando, Fla., and Brian E. Johnson of Catonsville; a daughter, Terry Ann Rice of Catonsville; and two grandchildren.
