9th-grade parent session set at River Hill

River Hill High School will hold a meeting for parents of incoming ninth-graders from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. tomorrow.

Parents will have an opportunity to learn about activities available to their children and how they, as parents, can be involved. Representatives from school clubs, student government, sports teams and parent organizations will be on hand.

The evening will begin with a presentation by the PTSA, music and drama boosters, athletic department and student government. Refreshments will be served.

Book clubs to meet at Glenwood library

The Glenwood library, 2350 Route 97, Glenwood, will hold a meeting of its Contemporary Fiction Book Club at 7 p.m. tomorrow. The group will discuss Before You Know Kindness by Chris Bohjalian.

The Western Howard County Seniors Book Club will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday to discuss The Color of Water by James McBride.

Registration is not needed and copies of the books are available at the branch.

Firefighter breakfast -- Fifth District Volunteer Fire Department will offer an all-you-can-eat buffet breakfast, its last of the season, from 8 a.m. to noon today at Ten Oaks Ballroom in Clarksville. The cost is $7; $6 for those ages 60 and older, and $4 for children ages 5 to 10. 410-313-7215.

Prep courses -- Registration is being accepted for preparatory courses for the new SAT and PSAT tests. Courses in western Howard County will be held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. today and May 21 at Glenelg High School. Tuition is $175 and includes materials. A portion of the tuition benefits the school. Internet safety -- The Marriotts Ridge High School guidance department will hold an Internet Safety Information Night at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the school auditorium. Members of the Maryland State Police will discuss Internet safety and what parents should know about the sites their children visit. The school is at 12100 Woodford Drive, Marriottsville.

Concert band -- The Columbia Concert Band will present its spring concert, featuring Alfred Reed's The Hounds of Spring, Hobbits by Johan DeMeij, music from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by John Williams and Victory Lopez, and other works, at 3 p.m. May 7 at River Hill High School, 12101 Route 108, Clarksville. Coffee with principal -- Folly Quarter Middle School invites parents to participate in "Coffee and Conversation" with Principal Carl Perkins from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. May 18. The monthly meetings offer an opportunity for parents and members of the community to hear about developments at the school. The school's PTA will hold a general membership meeting at 7:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
