McDaniel sets spring concerts

McDaniel College has announced its spring concerts, all free and open to the public.

The Student Chamber Music Ensembles will perform at 7 p.m. tomorrow in Little Baker Chapel. Seventeen students will present an original composition for flute and clarinet by student Jessica Nave; two original works for flute choir, Mountain Songs by Jennifer Higdon and Suite Butterfly by Phyllis Avidan Louke; and Gershwin's Fascinating Rhythm.

A student solo recital will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday in McDaniel Lounge. Student instrumentalists and vocalists will perform music including classical and contemporary.

Jazz Night will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday in Decker Center Forum. A variety of groups and vocalists, under the direction of senior lecturer Bo Eckard, will perform music as diverse as jazz standards and contemporary compositions.

The College Band concert will be held at 7 p.m. Friday on WMC Alumni Hall Mainstage. The band, featuring 40 McDaniel students and 20 community musicians, will perform Windsprints by Richard Sancedo and Folk Song Suite by Ralph Vaughn Williams; Lisa's Procession to the Cathedral by Wagner and The Pines of Rome by Ottorino Respighi; and music from Wicked, Riverdance and The Incredibles.

The Gospel Choir will hold its spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Baker Memorial Chapel. More than 50 students will perform spirituals and traditional and contemporary gospel music. Works include Looking for You by Kirk Franklin, Bread of Heaven by John P. Kee, and Steal Away. Soloists include Jenna Layman, Jackie Horton and Stacy Fitzwater.

Barbershop chorus to sing movie tunes

Songs from familiar films will be featured at the annual spring concert by the Old Line Statesmen Barbershop Chorus Saturday and May 7 at the Scott Center for Performing Arts at Carroll Community College, 1601 Washington Road.

"Reel to Real Barbershop" will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. May 7.

Movie melodies include those from Good Morning, Vietnam, Ray, The Little Mermaid and O Brother, Where Art Thou.

The concert will feature two quartets - All in Accord and Gentlemen's Blend - plus a guest appearance by the Children's Chorus of Carroll County on Saturday and dancing by George and Tina of the Lindy Hoppers Unlimited.

Tickets are $10 in advance, available at Westminster-area music stores and the Carroll Arts Center until Thursday or from the chorus at 410-795- 5050. Group prices are available for 10 or more tickets. Tickets are $12 at the door. Children 6 and younger are free.
