Coping with cancer is topic of series

Carroll Hospital Center and the American Cancer Society will co-sponsor the "I Can Cope" series to help provide insight, encouragement and education to people with cancer and their families.

This free series will meet from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. the first four Mondays of next month at the Women's Place at the hospital.

Presenters and topics include:

May 1: Dr. Yousuf Gaffar, oncologist and research director at the Carroll County Cancer Center, will provide a comprehensive introduction to cancer, its diagnosis, oncology terminology, treatment methods, including chemotherapy, and side effects.

May 8: Physical therapist John Lansinger and registered dietitian Amy Michael will offer suggestions on keeping the mind and body fit.

May 15: Oncology case manager Bonnie Miller and Monica Clark-McGrew, parish nurse for St. Joseph's Catholic Community, will discuss the emotional and spiritual feelings associated with a cancer diagnosis.

May 22: Phyllis Smelkinson, coordinator for the American Cancer Society of Carroll County, will describe resources available to cancer patients and ways to make every day a celebration of life.

Course to certify lifeguards offered

Merritt Athletic Club will offer a Red Cross Lifeguard Certification course from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and May 7 and 13 and 14 at the Eldersburg facility.

Some swimming and diving skills are required.

Also available are lifeguard recertification and cardiopulmonary resuscitation recertification May 20 and challenge exams for both courses that day.

Red Cross sets CPR, first aid classes

The American Red Cross is offering cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid classes at Westminster Senior Center, 125 Stoner Ave.

Participants must register and pay for classes in advance. Available courses are:

Adult CPR: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 13. $40.

Adult CPR and First Aid Basics: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 13 and $45.

Babysitter's Training for youths 11 to 15. The class is nine hours and costs $65.

Hospice workshop focuses on mothers

Carroll Hospice will hold a Mother's Day Workshop at 9 a.m. May 13 at its offices, 95 Carroll St., Westminster.

The workshop is open to anyone whose mother has died, as well as hospice families.
