School's Spring Carnival is Saturday

St. John's Parish Day School, 9130 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, will hold its Spring Carnival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, rain or shine. Games and activities for children, a Moon Bounce, pony rides, spin art, arts and crafts and other entertainment are planned.

Admission is free. Games tickets are 50 cents each. Prizes will be awarded at all the games. Food and beverages will be available.

Long Reach senior wins scholarship

The Kiwanis Club of Ellicott City has awarded a $14,000 scholarship to Tiffnie Allene Brandt, a senior at Long Reach High School and a resident of Elkridge.

She was selected from a field of 13 Howard County public school applicants. The money will be placed in her college account to pay for tuition, books, room and board.

To date, the club has provided scholarships totaling more than $149,000.

Faulkner discussion at library May16

The Miller branch library, 9421 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, will sponsor its final session of "Let's Talk About It: William Faulkner," with Diane Rowland, a specialist in Southern literature.

A discussion of The Sound and the Fury is scheduled for 7 p.m. May 16. Registration is to begin Tuesday.

Around Town

Viking 5K, Fun Run -- Mount Hebron Viking Backers will hold the 14th Annual Viking 5K and one-mile Fun Run at 9 a.m. today at Mount Hebron High School. Awards will be given to top finishers in five age groups and to Mount Hebron students, parents and others. Everyone will get a T-shirt and a chance to win one of more than 50 prizes. Refreshments and music are planned. Participants can register and pick up a packet at the school from 7:30 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. today. The cost is $25 for the race and $15 for the Fun Run. English practice -- The Miller branch library, 9421 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, is offering an English Conversation Club for people speaking English as a second language from 7:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Mondays. First-time participants must register before attending a meeting. 410-313-1950.

Chess club -- Elkridge Young Adult Chess Club, for those ages 11 to 17, will meet from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays at the Elkridge library, 6540 Washington Blvd., Elkridge. No experience is necessary. All levels of skill are welcome. Snacks will be provided. 410-313- 5077.

For girls -- The Elkridge library is offering Girls Group, a chance for those ages 12 to 15 to unwind after school, talk about favorite books, movies and music and try a craft. Garden club -- The Cross Country Garden Club will hold its fundraiser -- a plant, yard and bake sale -- from 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday on the parking lot at 9041 Chevrolet Drive, off St. Johns Lane, in Ellicott City. 410-992-7680.

Spring fling -- The Norbel School will hold "Spring Fling 2006: An Affair with Local Flair," a fundraiser for the school, at 7 p.m. Saturday at 6135 Old Washington Road, Elkridge. Food, music and a silent auction are planned. Tickets are $75 in advance.
