STATS -- The junior was 5-5 in No. 1 singles competition heading into the weekend. Last season, she and Sam Scurci went undefeated through the regular season in doubles competition.

SIDELINES -- After spending last season on a standout doubles team, Popa is competing in singles for the first time after Scurci suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in volleyball. Though she admits the switch has been a huge transition, she is now enjoying her new role. A volleyball setter in the fall, Popa carries a perfect 4.0 grade point average and serves as her class's prom chair. She also is vice president of her school's National Honor Society and a member of the Student Government Association. She hopes to study architecture in college.
