CAC streak grows for 16-0 Salisbury

Salisbury -- Dan Boyer had four goals and an assist as the Salisbury men's lacrosse team beat St. Mary's, 12-5, to capture its 12th consecutive Capital Athletic Conference championship at Sea Gull Stadium yesterday.

The Sea Gulls (16-0) jumped out to 2-0 lead with 10:41 left in the first quarter before the Seahawks' Jon Beam cut the lead to 2-1 a minute later. Salisbury went on a 3-0 run to lead 5-2 at the end of the first quarter.

St. Mary's (12-4) would get within a goal once more, at 5-4 with 12:01 left in the first half, before the Sea Gulls scored six unanswered goals to seal the win.

Cyrus Albertson led St. Mary's with two goals. Max Zarchin made 14 saves for Salisbury, five more than the Seahawks' Rich Barr. St. Mary's outshot Salisbury 36-30 and both teams scooped up 37 ground balls.

Salisbury beat Goucher, 17-7, in last year's title game and went on to win the NCAA Division III championship, beating Middlebury, 11-10.

The Sea Gulls face Washington College Saturday at 8:30 p.m. for the 2006 "War on the Shore" in Baltimore at M&T Bank Stadium. Salisbury has won the past four meetings with the Shoremen.
