This time of year, wildflowers proliferate at Patuxent Research Refuge in Laurel.

When conditions are ideal, spring beauties - tiny white flowers with strains of white and pink - cover the landscape like light snow, says Kathleen O'Malley of the Crane Program Outreach, which is located on the refuge.

Bluets, blue flowers and yellow centers, can be found scattered in the grass. O'Malley says they grow best in open fields, since they are easily overwhelmed by dense vegetation.
