Executive to head Cleveland airport

The No. 2 executive of Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport has been hired to take over as director of Cleveland's Hopkins International Airport. Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson introduced Ricky D. Smith on Friday as the city's director of port control. Smith, 44, who will earn $208,000 yearly, starts in June. Since 2004, Smith has been the senior deputy executive director and chief operating officer of the Maryland Aviation Administration.

Girl, 17, is killed in 2-vehicle crash

A 17-year-old from Southern Maryland was killed late Friday when the car she was riding in spun on wet pavement and was hit by a dump truck on Route 4 in southern Anne Arundel County. Haley Dawn Burrows, of Deer Chase Lane in Owings, was trapped inside a 2002 Oldsmobile Alero driven by Broderic Miles King, 19, of Paulyn Drive in Owings. Burrows was pronounced dead at Calvert Memorial Hospital, Anne Arundel County police said yesterday. King suffered serious injuries and was taken to Prince George's Hospital Center, police said.

Westminster man dies in crash

A 63-year-old Westminster man died yesterday afternoon when he lost control of his vehicle on wet pavement in Carroll County near Finksburg and collided with another vehicle, according to Maryland State Police. John Jerry Ferguson was traveling east about 4:30 p.m. on Route 140 near the Baltimore County line when he collided with a westbound vehicle. Ferguson was killed instantly. The driver of the other vehicle, Patricia Anne Conlon, 64, of Hampstead, was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, police said.
