Free document shredding set May 6

The Long Reach Community Association, in partnership with village center owner Perrine Wheeler Inc., will have a Cintas document-shredding truck on the village center parking lot from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 6 for residents to dispose of unwanted documents.

The service is free; residents must present identification showing residency. Participants will be issued "certificates of destruction," showing that their documents have been disposed of safely. The paper will be recycled.

Benefit to help pay for transplant

Outback Steakhouse will supply dinner for a fundraiser and auction, sponsored by the Oakland Mills High School PTSA, to help raise money for medical expenses for David Hillen, whose sons attend Oakland Mills middle and high schools. Hillen needs a liver transplant and has been unable to work because of the disease; the cost of a transplant is about $350,000.

The event will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Oakland Mills High School. The cost for dinner is $5.

Items set to be auctioned include Acela Express tickets to New York City; tickets to Iceland on Icelandic Airlines; tickets to the Booz Allen Classic golf tournament (June 19-26), and a gift certificate for 12 people to A Day at the Races at Laurel Park. Prizes also include lunch with County Executive James N. Robey and state Sen. Sandra B. Schrader.

At Amherst house -- Sandra Duerr is teaching a ballet class for young children ages 3 to 5 from 12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. Mondays at Amherst House, 7251 Eden Brook Drive. There is a fee. Wee Friends, parent-and-child classes for ages 18 months to 4 years led by Judy Milke, is offered Monday, Wednesday or Friday mornings, depending on the age of the child. A session is to begin tomorrow. Leigh Roberts is conducting an eight-week session of beginner Pilates from 7:15 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. Mondays. Positive parenting -- The Family Tree is accepting registration for parent classes, to be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday through June 21 at Columbia Teen Center, 5853 Robert Oliver Place in Oakland Mills Village Center. The classes, which are free, will focus on habits of healthy families, stress and anger management, good ways to communicate and positive ways to discipline, the importance of home safety, succeeding in school and ensuring a child's well-being and parents' self-esteem. Relay for Life -- Howard County's Relay for Life, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, will be held June 2 and 3 at Hammond High School. Teams are being formed for the community overnight event during which participants camp out while team members walk on a track through the night.
