Drivers behave in unsafe ways

A project that trained 100 candid cameras on motorists for more than a year found that reading while driving increases the risk of a crash or near-crash more than threefold. The study also determined that nearly 80 percent of crashes and 65 percent of close calls involve distracted driving. pg 1a

Illegal immigrants detained

In nationwide raids that set a single-day record for work-site enforcement arrests, immigration officials said they had detained 1,187 illegal immigrants, along with seven managers working at branches of the nation's largest pallet maker. pg 3a

Provident shares decline

Provident Bankshares Corp. reported yesterday that its first-quarter profit jumped 16 percent as home-equity and commercial real estate lending increased. But those results missed Wall Street forecasts, and the stock posted its biggest one-day percentage drop in nearly two years. pg 1e
