Erik Bedard wasn't told that the eighth inning would be his last, but the Orioles left-hander knew. With a one-run lead, a mounting pitch count and two relievers warming up, Bedard had little margin of error. One bad pitch and his day was likely over.

So Bedard, a pitcher who has been criticized in the past for nibbling too much and not challenging hitters, struck out Chone Figgins looking, his fastball reaching 96 mph during the at-bat. He then got Orlando Cabrera and Garret Anderson to ground out to shortstop Miguel Tejada, ending the inning on 12 pitches.
