Sign-up is on for Viking 5K, Fun Run

The Mount Hebron Viking Backers are accepting registrations for the 14th Annual Viking 5K and one-mile Fun Run. The race is to start at 9 a.m. April 30 at Mount Hebron High School and will wind through the surrounding neighborhood.

Awards will be given to the top three finishers overall and in five age groups, the top three Mount Hebron students, top parent and faculty member and first middle and elementary school participants.

Everyone will get a T-shirt and a chance to win one of more than 50 random prizes. Refreshments and a disc jockey are planned.

Participants can register and pick up a packet at the school from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 29 and 7:30 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. April 30. The cost, through April 29, is $20 for the 5K; $12 for the Fun Run. Race day registration is $25 for the race and $15 for the Fun Run.

Proceeds will help support clubs and other extracurricular activities.

Mount Hebron High School is at Route 99 and St. Johns Lane, west of U.S. 29, in Ellicott City.

Motivational talks to start tomorrow

The men's group at Bethany United Methodist Church will sponsor a series of motivational speakers, including Matt Stover of the Baltimore Ravens and Army Lt. Col. Robert Powers.

The talks, designed to emphasize the importance of spiritual values, conscience, ambition and moral strength, will begin at 6 a.m. tomorrow. Dave Krueger, vice president of Search Ministries, will speak from 6:05 a.m. to 7:15 a.m.

The cost for the series is $30. Coffee and bagels will be available. Registration is recommended. The church is at 2875 Bethany Lane, Ellicott City.

Teen 'zine -- The Miller branch library will hold a meeting of its Teen 'Zine editorial committee from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. tomorrow. Future journalists, poets, cartoonists and publishing barons, ages 13 to 18, are invited to attend. Committee members write and collect articles and stories. English practice -- The Miller branch library, 9421 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, is offering an English Conversation Club for people speaking English as a second language from 7:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Mondays. First-time participants must register before attending a meeting. 410-313-1950.

Driver education -- The Mount Hebron Viking Backers will offer driver education classes open to everyone. Sessions are scheduled from 2:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. weekdays, Tuesday to May 1 and May 15-26. Driving time is scheduled after completion of the instruction period. The cost is $375, including classes and on-road training. Students must be at least 15 and have their learner's permits before taking the driving portion of the program. Instruction will be provided by Top Driver Inc. 800-374-8373. Chess club -- The Elkridge Young Adult Chess Club, for those ages 11 to 17, will meet from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays at the Elkridge library, 6540 Washington Blvd., Elkridge. No experience is necessary. All levels of skill are welcome. Snacks will be provided. 410-313-5077.

For girls -- The Elkridge library is offering Girls Group, a chance for those ages 12 to 15 to unwind after school, talk about favorite books, movies and music and try a craft. Speakers will be invited to talk about things that matter to girls. The group is to meet from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays. Registration is requested. 410-313-5088.

Extravaganza -- St. Augustine School, 5990 Old Washington Road, Elkridge, will hold an "Evening of Chance Extravaganza" from 8 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. April 29. Food, raffles, a silent auction, electronic horseracing, wheels of chance, beer, wine and dancing are planned. The last ticket drawn during the evening will win $10,000. Spring fling -- The Norbel School will hold "Spring Fling 2006: An Affair with Local Flair," a fundraiser for the school, at 7 p.m. May 6 at 6135 Old Washington Road, Elkridge. Food, music and a silent auction are planned. Tickets are $75 in advance. Norbel is an independent school for children, pre-first grade through 12th grade, with language or learning differences, such as dyslexia and ADHD.
