MARIKEN JOHANNA STRAUB-KESSLER died April 1, 2006 at the young age of 42 in Baltimore, MD after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was the daughter of Doortje Shover of Newark, DE and the late Dr. Richard R. Straub of Eleverson, PA. Mariken graduated from Lower Merion High School in Ardmore, PA in 1981. She was a National Merit Scholar. She graduated from Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH in 1985. During her "year abroad" in College, she studied in Toulouse, France and translated marriage licenses from the Napoleonic era. She also lived in The Netherlands, where she studied the Dutch language. Both in high school and college, she was an avid rower on the crew team as well as an agile bicyclist. She was an accomplished pianist and cellist. She bicycled from East Coast to West Coast after college and led bicycle and endurance trips for Longacre Expeditions. Before her marriage she taught at Baltimore Polytechnic Institute. Later in life she was licensed to practice acapuncture and was very much loved by her patients. Her family and friends will always remember her engaging manner and her endearing smile. Mariken is survived by her husband of 15 years, George Kessler and their two children, Sam (13) and Sophie (11) of Baltimore; her mother, Doortje Shover and stepfather Leslie C. Breedlove of Newark, DE; her brother Pieter Straub-Bohen, sister-in-law Courtney Bohen and their children Spruce, Teale and Silas of Seattle, WA. Other survivors include: Betty Karreman, Godfried and Millette Karreman, Astrid Karreman and Herman Vergouwen; Tilly Karreman, Ruud Ravensbergen and Jorie; Louise Karreman, Freya, Ward and Ivar; Stephanie and Arie Kattenberg, Arie Jr. and Gijs, of The Netherlands; Lisa Heidelmaier; Doug Randak of Baltimore; and Mariken's many good friends and associates. A Memorial Service will be held in June 2006
