WALTER ROBERT ABELL, JR., 88, died at his home in Sarasota, Florida, on April 2, 2006. Mr. Abell, born May 2, 1917, was the son of Walter Robert Abell and Lydia Miller Abell of Baltimore and was the great-grandson of Arunah Shepherdson Abell, founder of the Baltimore Sun. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Georgette Melcher Abell; son Edward Welch Abell of Wilmington, NC, daughter of Louise A. Huin of Sarasota, Florida; son Christopher Robert Abell of Sewickley, Pennsylvania, and daughter, Sally Abell Smith of of Pleasantville, New York; 11 grandchildren Darren and Bryan Welch, Lauren Lazar, Alexander and Sarah Huin, Rachel, Gregory, Matthew and Genevieve Abell; Chelsea and Harrison Smith; and three great-grandchildren. A graduate of Gilman School in Baltimore and the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Mr. Abell was an executive with Air France for 25 years. He was a veteran of World War II and participated in the invasion of Normandy in 1944 for which he received the Purple Heart. Raised in Biarritz, France, Mr. Abell traveled extensively, most especially in his beloved France.
