Smoking cessation by acupuncture

The Women's Place at Carroll Hospital Center is offering an eight-week course, "Smoking Cessation through Acupuncture," beginning at 7:30 p.m. April 21 for an introductory price of $75 per week, for a total of $600, due at the time of registration.

Licensed acupuncturist and addictions counselor Teal Beatty leads the course, which combines peer support, relaxation techniques and behavior modifications with acupuncture to help reduce the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal and help participants live smoke-free lives.

Class size is limited. Participants should check with their health insurance company to see whether any portion of the fee will be reimbursed.

Doctor is named Physician of Year

Dr. Natvarlal Rajpara was named Carroll Hospital Center's 2006 Physician of the Year during the recent Doctor's Day Celebration.

Board-certified in sleep medicine, pulmonology and critical care, Rajpara was recognized for what was termed his dedication and service to the hospital and community.

Rajpara joined Carroll Hospital Center in 1983. He has twice been chief of medicine.

The hospital also recognized the Physicians of the Month for part of the past year: Sybil Pentsil (July), Mervat El-Mansoury (August), John Abel (September), Alexander Bogdaschewskyi (October), John A. Steers (November), Enrico Giangeruso (December), Vajira Gunawardane (January), Natvarlal Rajpara (February).

Students set to be nursing assistants

Seven Carroll Community College students recently completed their training to become certified nursing assistants.

Melissa Gulli, Grace Fogle, Katherine Hossein, Deborah Thelen, Brenda Joy Black, Johnpaul Allen and Stephen Allia received pins and certificates.

They are eligible for certification in the state of Maryland.
