Columbia's election season under way

It's election time in Columbia.

Half of the six Columbia Council positions up for election are contested this year, including seats in Harper's Choice and Wilde Lake. The incumbents there, Wolfger Schneider and Joshua Feldmark, respectively, have decided not to run for re-election.

The Town Center seat on the Columbia Council is being contested because of legislation signed last week by Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. that allows residents in annexed portions of Town Center to run for positions on the Columbia Council and the village board.

Most villages are holding Candidate Nights this week, allowing candidates for Columbia Council and village board positions the opportunity to discuss their views with residents.

The Columbia Council will meet only once a year, in May, when the elected council representatives appoint themselves to the Columbia Association's board of directors. The board meets twice a month.

Here is the Columbia Council election schedule and the names of the candidates:

Dorsey's Search: Columbia Council - no election; Village Board - (four candidates for four seats) *Brian Cuthie, Greg Pelesh, *Diane Turner, *Larry Winston.

April 11: candidate night, 7 p.m. at Linden Hall.

April 22: Polls open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Linden Hall, 4765 Dorsey Hall Drive. One vote is allowed per household, and voters must have been a resident since at least March 1.

Harper's Choice: Columbia Council (two candidates for one seat) - David Willemain, Cynthia Coyle; Village Board - no election.

April 17: candidate night, 7:30 p.m. at Kahler Hall.

April 22: Polls open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. near the Safeway in the village center. One vote is allowed per property.

Hickory Ridge: Columbia Council - *Miles Coffman, (uncontested); Village Board - (seven candidates for five seats) Dawn Ashburn, George Bendor, *Linda Hitzelberger, *Tom Louden, *Nancy McCord, *Gregg Schwind, *David Zeitzer.

April 17: candidate night, 7:30 p.m. at Hawthorn Center.

April 22: Polls open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hawthorn Center, 6175 Sunny Spring. One vote is allowed per household owner and tenant.

Kings Contrivance: Columbia Council - no election; Village Board - (two candidates for three seats) *Hillary Bierce, Lorraine Kelly. (A third member will be appointed in May.)

No candidate night.

April 21: Polls open from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

April 22: Polls open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Polling on both dates at Amherst House, 7251 Eden Brook Drive. One vote is allowed per resident, who must be at least 18 years old.

Long Reach: Columbia Council - no election; Village Board - (three candidates for three seats) *Karen Hitcho, *Bridget Mugane, *William Taylor.

No candidate night.

April 22: Polls open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the village center. One vote is allowed per owner and/or tenant.

Oakland Mills: Columbia Council - *Barbara L. Russell (uncontested); Village Board - (four candidates for five seats) *Phil Engelke, *Karen Gray, *W. "Kriz" Krizmanich, *William Woodcock. (A fifth member will be appointed in May.)

April 11: Residents are encouraged to come to the village board meeting to speak with candidates.

April 22: Polls open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The Other Barn, 5851 Robert Oliver Place. One vote per household for owner and/or tenant.

Owen Brown: Columbia Council - *Pearl Atkinson-Stewart (uncontested); Village Board - no election. The two incumbents, Rani Chohan and Andy Stack, will be appointed by the village board May 2.

River Hill: Columbia Council - no election; Village Board - (four candidates for three seats) Larry Blickman, *Todd Harrison, Sean Keller, Michelle Potocko

April 18: candidate night, 7:30 at Claret Hall.

April 22: Polls open from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Columbia Gym, and from 10:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Claret Hall, 6020 Daybreak Circle. One vote is allowed per resident, who must be at least 18 years old, with proof of identification.

Town Center: Columbia Council - (two candidates for one seat) Gail Broida, *Jud Malone; Village Board - (four candidates for two seats) *Burt Knauft, Stephen Meskin, Hugh Tousey, Linda Wengel.

April 11: candidate night, 7 p.m. at Vantage House.

April 29: Polls open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Vantage Point Park and from 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. at Vantage House and Evergreens House for residents only. One vote is allowed per property.

Wilde Lake: Columbia Council - (two candidates for one seat) Philip Kirsch, William Santos; Village Board - (six candidates for five seats) *Sarah Croushler, *Vincent Marando, Linda Odum, *Mary Pivar, *Rhoda Toback, Robert Vogel.

April 10: candidate night, 7:30 p.m. at Slayton House.

April 22: Polls open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the village center outside Giant Food. One vote allowed per property owner and/or tenant.
