Red Cross offering classes in CPR

The Central Maryland Red Cross will offer a class in adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow at First Presbyterian Church, 9325 Presbyterian Circle, Columbia.

The class will also be offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 15 and 29 at Owen Brown Community Center, 6800 Cradlerock Way, Columbia. The cost is $40.

Adult, infant and child CPR classes will be offered from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow at First Presbyterian Church and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 29 at Owen Brown Community Center. The cost is $45.

NAMI seeking help, fundraiser sponsors

The Maryland chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is seeking sponsors and volunteers for its annual fundraising event, "NAMIWALKS For the Mind of America," to be held April 30 at Centennial Park in Ellicott City. Walkers from around the state are expected to attend.

NAMI -- Howard County is offering a support group for parents and caregivers of children and teens with emotional or behavioral problems such as serious depression, anxiety, and bipolar, obsessive-compulsive, oppositional-defiant and co-occurring disorders.

The group meets at 7:30 p.m. on the last Wednesday of each month in the day room at Harmony Hall Retirement Community, 6336 Cedar Lane, Columbia.

Mammograms -- Howard County Health Department offers free mammograms to women ages 40 and older who meet certain requirements. 410-313-4255.

Body analysis -- A computerized body analysis that includes lean body mass-to-fat ratio, estimated basal metabolism, exercise guidelines and suggested weight loss will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to noon tomorrow at the hospital's Wellness Center, Columbia Medical Center, 11055 Little Patuxent Parkway, Suite L-9. 410-740-7601. Osteoporosis -- An osteoporosis screening will be offered from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. April 18 at the Wellness Center. Participants should wear socks and shoes that can easily be removed; the test is performed on the heel. Appointments are necessary. The cost is $35. 410-740-7601.


Tutorial -- The STTAR (Specialized Trauma Treatment, Advocacy and Recovery) Center Inc. is offering private safety education for families. The presentations -- which cover topics such as "stranger danger," good touch/bad touch/confusing touch; child abuse; Internet safety; sexual harassment; safe dating; and date-rape drugs -- are designed for parents seeking help in guiding their children in safe behavior. Wellness -- Howard County General Hospital's Community Health Education program will offer these classes and services:

Losing weightIndividualized weight-loss counseling with a registered dietitian is offered between 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the hospital. Appointments, which cost $25 for a half-hour visit, must be scheduled in advance. 410-740-7601.

YogaClasses in Yoga I are being offered from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, through April 18 at Columbia Medical Center. Yoga II is being offered from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. through April 19. The cost for an eight-week session is $80. Registration is required. 410-740-7601.

Tai chiA class for beginners is offered from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesdays at Ellicott City Senior Center, 9401 Frederick Road, Ellicott City. Advanced beginners meet from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the same location. A new 10-class series is to begin this month. The cost is $80. 410-740-7601.

`Mall Milers'A walking-for-health program at The Mall in Columbia is co-sponsored by Howard County General Hospital, local agencies and businesses. Blood pressure screenings are available on the second Tuesday of each month. The program is free. 410-730-3300.

`Standing tall'An exercise class for those with osteoporosis or osteopenia combines information with strength and posture exercises. The class will be held on a date to be determined at the Central Maryland Rehabilitation Center. 410-312-9000.
