2005 Angove's Riesling, Clare Valley ($17)

WINE FIND

April 05, 2006|By MICHAEL DRESSER | MICHAEL DRESSER,SUN REPORTER

This crisp, flavorful Australian white wine bears little resemblance to the fruity, slightly sweet German or American rieslings you may be used to. It's bone-dry, with relatively high alcoholic strength, and its style is akin to that of the rieslings of Alsace. There's good pear-lime fruit, but its flavor profile is dominated by minerals and herbs. The wine shows admirable grip, length and penetration. This enlightened producer uses a screw cap to rule out cork taint. Serve with shellfish, sole, rockfish.
