From the diary of a pupil at Howard Institute, a 19th- century school in Glenwood: "Monday, April 14 [1873] - In consequence of the alarm of fire, school was vacated, boys and girls repaired in hasty confusion to the scene of the anticipated disaster, about two miles distant, only to see a small hen house burn."
