Project Clean Stream needs help tomorrow

Volunteers are needed from 9 a.m. to noon tomorrow, rain or shine, for Project Clean Stream, a major effort in the Patapsco Valley region.

The effort is sponsored by the Friends of the Patapsco Valley & Heritage Greenway and the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay. Work is planned in Elkridge, Ellicott City and other areas.

Trash bags and work gloves will be provided, if needed. Volunteers should wear comfortable shoes and clothing, including long pants; sunscreen and insect repellent are suggested.

Youth Service Days slated April 21-23

The Volunteer Center Serving Howard County, the Local Children's Board and the Association of Community Services are promoting Youth Service Days, scheduled for April 21-23. The project is part of National Youth Service Days, a program to mobilize youth to identify the needs of their communities and engage in community service.

The volunteer center will refer young people seeking projects to agencies interested in working with young volunteers.

Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will celebrate Earth Day and National Youth Service Day by planting trees and installing tree shelters at West Friendship Park from 9 a.m. to noon April 22. The rain date is April 29.

"Camp Make A Difference," a summer camp that includes volunteer projects in the community and recreational activities is being organized by a partnership of the Volunteer Center and the Columbia Association. The program will be open to middle and high school students, through 11th grade.

Disaster-readiness volunteers sought

The Volunteer Center Serving Howard County, in cooperation with the Community Emergency Response Network, is recruiting volunteers for local nonprofit and government agencies needing help with disaster preparedness and recovery.

A volunteer orientation is scheduled from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. April 25 at 10221 Wincopin Circle, Columbia.
