The Kickoff

March 30, 2006|By RAY FRAGER

Am I just being crotchety? Here's the deal: Sometimes, I just like words and phrases to be used in a way that matches their meaning. OK, more than sometimes. It's just that sometimes it bugs me more than others.

For example, on Monday night's SportsCenter, Dick Vitale is giving us his "unsung heroes" of the teams in the Final Four. One of them is Will Thomas of George Mason. Now, how exactly is Thomas unsung? How can you say anything about the Patriots' run to the Final Four without mentioning Thomas, whose strong inside play has been such a huge part of their success? Are people writing and talking about George Mason and not mentioning this player from Baltimore? At this point, there is nothing "unsung" about Thomas.

Grrrrr.

All right, I feel much better.
