The Kickoff

Manager Sam Perlozzo said he envisions Jim Brower pitching the sixth and seventh innings, with the possibility of setting up in the eighth, depending on how he's throwing. "He'll pretty much dictate that," Perlozzo said.

The bullpen still is under construction, and Perlozzo hinted again that someone from another organization could "sneak in here at the end." Maybe that was more than a hint.

Tim Byrdak is the left-handed setup man for now. If no other moves are made, the bullpen looks like it'll shake down as Brower, Chris Ray, LaTroy Hawkins and Sendy Rleal from the right side, and Byrdak, Eric DuBose and John Halama from the left, though Eddy Rodriguez remains in camp.

Perlozzo instructed left-hander Vic Darensbourg to work on his breaking ball in Triple-A and to start getting out left-handed hitters more consistently. If Darensbourg can do it, he might help out later this summer.

These are the 13 position players I would keep, again if nobody arrives in a trade: Ramon Hernandez, Javy Lopez, Brian Roberts, Miguel Tejada, Melvin Mora, Jay Gibbons, Nick Markakis, Jeff Conine, Kevin Millar, Luis Matos, Corey Patterson, David Newhan and Chris Gomez.
