Erma Ora James Byrd, 88, the wife of Sen. Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia, died Saturday night at the couple's home in McLean, Va. She had been battled an undisclosed illness for five years, according to Byrd's spokesman, Tom Gavin.

Mrs. Byrd met presidents and senators, kings, queens, and other celebrities, but she never sought the limelight.

She once told the Charleston Daily Mail, "I leave the politics to Robert. The people elected him, not me."

Robert Kenneth Campbell, 83, a promoter who helped shepherd NASCAR through its infancy, died Friday in Richmond, Va., after a long illness.

Mr. Campbell spent nearly 60 years promoting auto racing, both as a partner to track owner Paul Sawyer in Richmond and as one of the public relations minds who helped turn NASCAR from a curiosity into a Southern staple.
