Maryland southpaw Tony "The Tiger" Thompson scored his 17th knockout March 18 by beating Philadelphia's Maurice Wheeler in Atlantic City, N.J. The heavyweight improved his record to 27-1 before returning to his five-day-a-week workouts at his Hillcrest gym.

About the fight, Thompson said: "They kept telling me to go to the part of the body that never moves: the body. The left hook was open all day. I just dipped down and hit him with a wicked left hook to the body, and that was all she wrote."
