Arts council sets summer camps

The Carroll County Arts Council has announced its summer arts camps, to be held at the Carroll Arts Center.

Camps include:

Arts & Crafts Camp for ages 8-12: July 10-14 or July 17-21. The cost is $80 for members and $90 for nonmembers. Traditional arts and crafts and music from Africa, Japan, Indonesia, Argentina, Mexico and Maryland will be featured.

Creative Kids Camp for ages 5-7: July 24--28 or July 31--Aug. 4. The cost is $80 for members and $90 for nonmembers. Sing-a-longs, drama games, crafts, dance and movement, movies and visits by local performers will be included.

Fun Company Theatre Camp for ages 9-13: July 10-21. The cost is $250 for members and $260 for nonmembers. Students will learn stage fundamentals, then prepare for a show.

Arts Council members will get priority registration through Friday. The public may register after April 1.

Arts center to hold floral exhibit

The Carroll Arts Center will present a floral exhibit, In Bloom, from Saturday through May 26 in the Tevis Gallery at 91 W. Main St., Westminster.

An opening reception will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. April 6. A free screening of the docu-drama A Marriage: Georgia O'Keeffe and Alfred Stieglitz will be held at 7 p.m.

Blooms, buds and blossoms will be featured in works by Cindy Baker, Marge Wickes, Eduardo de la Cruz, Suzanne Mancha, Denee Barr, James D. Plumb, David Plumb and Bharti S. Morjaria.

Ceramic garden containers by Kim Tyssoswski and handmade ceramic tile mosaic mirrors and other decorative accessories by Kathy Trani will be displayed in the lobby during the exhibit.

Carroll florists and floral designers will be invited to provide the gallery with live arrangements.

Carroll Singers will perform

The Carroll Singers will present its second concert under the direction of Beverly Mauck at 7:30 p.m. April 3 and 4 in the Westminster High School auditorium, 1225 Washington Road.

The Carroll Singers is a reorganization of the former Carroll County Choral Society and includes many members of that group, as well as new singers.

"The Great American Songbook" will feature the music of Irving Berlin, George Gershwin and Cole Porter performed by the chorus and soloists.

Jazz pianist Joel Holmes will accompany the chorus, and Herb Sell will put his personal touch on "Begin the Beguine" by Porter.

Tickets are available at the Carroll County Arts Council, Coffey Music and Stu's Music in Westminster or chorus members.

Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens.

Day is planned for kids out of school

The Carroll County Arts Council will hold a "School's Out ... Art's In" day of arts, crafts, games and a movie on the big screen to occupy children while they're off from school.

The next event for ages 6 to 12 will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 17 at the Carroll Arts Center, 91 W. Main St., Westminster.

In the morning, children will complete several themed arts and craft projects related to the film American Tail, about the adventures of a young Russian mouse that emigrates to America.

After lunch, the animated feature will be shown with popcorn, candy and a drink.

Tuition is $35, or $30 for Arts Council members. Advance reservations are required.

The public is welcome to attend the movie only at 1 p.m. It will cost $5 for adults, and $4 for Arts Council members, those 60 and older, and children 12 and younger.
