Boosters will hold auction

The Westminster High School Parent Boosters 2009 will hold a live art auction and a sports and music memorabilia and estate jewelry sale April 8 at the Best Western Conference Center in Westminster.

A preview of items will be held from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.; the auction is at 8 p.m. Tickets are $35 per person or $65 per couple. Major credit cards, checks and cash will be accepted; only checks or cash for the silent auction.

Tickets include hot and cold hors d'oeuvres, wine, door and bidder prizes, and a cash bar.

Senior center plans talks on pets, Medicare

The Westminster Senior Center, 125 Stoner Ave., has announced activities.

Iris Katz from the Carroll County Humane Society will give a talk and demonstration about seniors and their pets at 12:30 p.m. Thursday.

A talk on the Medicare Plan D will be given at noon April 4.

An Easter ham luncheon will be served at 11:30 a.m. April 11. By Heart will entertain at 1 p.m. Guests are welcome to dress up or wear an Easter bonnet. Reservations are required by April 4.

An AARP 55 Alive driving course will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 20 and 21. The cost is $5 for those age 50 and older. Registration and lunch reservations are required.

Westminster library schedules activities

Westminster branch library, 50 E. Main St., will offer:

"Cuentos y Cantos: El Agua/Water" at 7 p.m. Thursday for all ages (children younger than 3 with an adult). This story time features translated English favorites and traditional Hispanic favorites.

"Storm Chaser" for ages 7 to 10, teens and adults at 7 p.m. Thursday. A person who chases twisters will describe the storms.

"Civil War Encampment and Living History Demonstration" at 1 p.m. Saturday for all ages. The Pipe Creek Civil War Round Table and an actor from the movie Gettysburg will talk about The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara and how it relates to the battle and the movie. A living history demonstration of an encampment and weapons of the Civil War will be held. Children 3 and younger must be with an adult.

"Ghost Walk" at 6:45 p.m. April 4 and 12 for ages 10 and older (those younger than 14 must have a parental permission slip and be accompanied by an adult). The sites of local ghosts and legends, including some from the Civil War era, will be visited. Registration is required.

Book Club for adults at 6:30 p.m. April 5 to discuss The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara.

"Yoga for Beginners - Learn to Relax Using Breathing and Stretching Techniques" for teens and adults at 7 p.m. April 5. Registration is required.

Sailor returns from deployment

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Michael J. McGinnis has returned from deployment in support of the war on terrorism while assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, based in Norfolk, Va.

During the deployment, the unit launched 10,000 combat flights and provided surveillance, reconnaissance and close air support to ground forces in Iraq.

He is the son of Danny McGinnis of Westminster. He joined the Navy in December 2002.


Blood drive tomorrow in Mount Airy

A community blood drive will be held from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. tomorrow at the firemen's activity building at Route 27 and Twin Arch Road, Mount Airy.

Business card exchange planned

The Greater Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce will hold a free business card exchange from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd.

Refreshments and door prizes will be offered.

Business card exchanges are networking events for local business people of all professions in the greater Mount Airy area.

Beth Shalom schedules Seder

Beth Shalom Congregation of Carroll County will hold a Passover Seder at the synagogue, 2020 W. Liberty Road, near Winfield.

The Second Night Passover Seder will be held at 6:30 p.m. April 13 with a seder service and meal.

Tickets are $18 for adults and $6 for children younger than 12.
