Patuxent refuge plans April programs

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Patuxent Research Refuge will offer a "Wildflower Wander," for ages 16 and older, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. April 9. Participants will explore the role that wildflowers play in the ecosystem and identify some common species. Field guides, water and a magnifying glass are recommended.

"Going Batty," a program for ages 8 to 10 on the flying mammal, will be offered from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. April 9, and an "Owl Prowl" for all ages will be offered from 6:15 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. April 14. Participants will explore the refuge at night while looking and listening for owls.

The programs will be held at the refuge's North Tract, on Route 198 between the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and Route 32, in Laurel. Programs are free, but reservations are required.

Theater in Fulton to present `Oz'

The Young Artists Theatre in Cherry Tree Center, at U.S. 29 and Route 216, Fulton, is presenting The Wizard of Oz on weekends and during spring break, through May 21.

Performances are to be held at 7 p.m. Fridays, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. Spring break shows are planned at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. April 10, 11 and 13.

Tickets to the one-hour production are $8; $7 a person for groups of 10 or more. Special arrangements can be made for birthdays and Scout groups.

Easter party for kids scheduled for April 8

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8097 will hold its children's Easter party for youngsters to age 12 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. April 8.

A magic show is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. The Easter Bunny will be on hand, and giveaways are planned.

Admission is free. The post is at 7209 Montevideo Road, in Jessup.

Seniors dinner dance May 3 at Savage Mill

In celebration of Older Americans Month, the Howard County Office on Aging will hold a Spring Dinner Dance in the Great Room at Savage Mill from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. May 3. The Goldenaires will perform. The dinner will be a buffet.

Tickets are $13 and will be available at senior centers, starting April 4.

Church's child center plans open house

The Open Arms Christian Child Development Center, a ministry of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Laurel, will hold an open house from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. April 2, with tours, entertainment and an opportunity to register children for summer camp and fall programs.

The center, which provides child care for infants through preschool age children and before- and after-school care for school-age children, is at 13611 Laurel-Bowie Road.

Fitness, dance -- South Laurel Recreation Council is accepting registration for spring classes for children, teens, adults and families. Classes, which are held at Montpelier, Oaklands and James Harrison elementary schools, the Montpelier Carriage House and Montpelier Neighborhood Park, are getting under way. Fitness classes include yoga, tai chi, and Pilates, as well as tennis for children, teens and adults. Latin dance, beginning and intermediate salsa, and country line dancing are offered. Bluegrass -- Savage Bluegrass, a local group that plays at My Way Restaurant and Bar in North Laurel, will perform at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The restaurant offers karaoke from Sunday through Thursday, except for alternate Tuesdays when Savage Bluegrass performs. Bands perform Fridays and Saturdays. Health expo -- Murray Hill Middle School and the Howard County Health Department will present the fourth Family Health Expo from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the school. The Health Expo will offer free blood pressure, dental, vision and hearing screenings, as well as testing for diabetes, HIV and breast health. Representatives from the Health Department will answer questions. Participating will be the Domestic Violence Center, Family and Children's Services of Central Maryland, the Foreign-born Information and Referral Network, Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center, Howard County General Hospital, the Howard County Office on Aging, the STTAR Center and others. Local groups serving non-English-speaking residents will also be on hand. The Balloon Man and a disc jockey will entertain children. Free box lunches will be provided, and door prizes and giveaways are planned. Admission is free. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Murray Hill Middle School is at 9989 Winter Sun Road.
