1836: County is formed

Carroll County was created from parts of Baltimore and Frederick counties by an act of the General Assembly on March 25, 1836.

News of the vote was rushed from Annapolis to Westminster by a courier on horseback. The new county did not formally begin business until early the next year, after another vote by a newly elected legislature, according to the terms of the law that created the county, House Bill 269.
