Meeting to focus on nutrition, health

Marilyn "Maryada" Preston, a Vaishnava priestess in the Vedic tradition who holds a degree from the Clayton College of Natural Health, will speak about nutrition and achieving health naturally at a meeting of the Inspirational Spirit of The Phoenix Inc., to be held from 2:15 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. tomorrow at the east Columbia library, 6600 Cradlerock Way, Columbia.

Ayanna Najuma, principal with Lincoln-McLeod LLC, a public relations firm in Washington, will discuss the importance of the mind-body-spirit connection to health.

The Inspirational Spirit of the Phoenix, an organization founded by Tynia Canada, works to empower women of all races and religions and from all walks of life. Participants are asked to dress comfortably for the exercises. Men are welcome.

A donation of $20 is suggested.

Candidates forum to be held tomorrow

African-Americans in Howard County Political Action Committee, in cooperation with African-American churches and community groups, will hold a forum for county executive candidates at 10 a.m. tomorrow in Agape Hall at St. John Baptist Church, 8910 Old Annapolis Road (Route 108), Ellicott City.

The meeting is one of a series of forums planned to engage candidates in discussion of community concerns.

Libraries to close all day Tuesday

All branches of the Howard County Library will be closed Tuesday for an in-service staff day.

Families urged to seek energy aid

The Community Action Council of Howard County urges low-income families who have not applied for energy assistance through the Maryland Energy Assistance Program since July 1 to do so before May 26. Applications will not be accepted after May 31.

The council urges people to apply for assistance as soon as possible because of an expected increase of 50 percent to 80 percent in the cost of electricity after deregulation in July. Those who have not paid their winter fuel bills are encouraged to do so now.
