All-anne Arundel County

March 22, 2006

Matthew Centrowitz

For all of his success in cross country - he's won two Class 4A state crowns - the junior had never struck gold at the Class 4A-3A state championships in indoor track and field. Until now.

Centrowitz won the 1,600 meters at the state meet in 4 minutes, 24.72 seconds, capping a sweep of the event at the Central regional and Anne Arundel County levels. His county meet record time of 4:20.2 in the 1,600 shattered the previous county record of 4:29.7 set by Old Mill's Mark Hendricks in 1980.

He didn't slow down, as he took the 3,200 at the county championships. His time of 9:40.8 broke the previous county mark of 9:46.1 that he established last winter.

The road to the Anne Arundel County title wound through Old Mill, the 10-time defending champion. The Mustangs, however, were undaunted by such a prospect.

Emphasizing team over individuals, they emerged from a crowd of contenders that included Arundel and Broadneck to capture their first county crown since 1997. Meade's depth helped the school register at least four points in 12 of 15 events at the county championships.
