GIRLS BASKETBALL

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Zhondria Benn

Western

Benn emerged as the top player in the Baltimore City league, leading the Doves to a perfect run through the league and the city championship.

At 6 feet 2, she dominated inside, but she also spent time at small forward and developed a more versatile game. She contributed 15.2 points and 11.4 rebounds per game as the No. 5 Doves (24-2) reached the Class 3A state final.

Benn drew praise not just for her game, but also for her inexhaustible work ethic. She was in the final 100 of 2,500 girls nominated for the McDonald's All-America team. She had more than 1,300 points and 1,300 rebounds in her four-year career.

COACH OF THE YEAR

Jackie Boswell

Seton Keough

While Boswell had considerable talent on her team, much of it was young. That didn't stop the Gators from reaching the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference final, finishing with the No. 2 ranking and going 25-6.

Although the Gators could not get past St. Frances -- half of their losses were to the No. 1 team -- they dropped only one other game in a conference that featured five teams ranked in the Top 10.

Boswell, in her sixth season as the Gators' coach, guided them to two wins over Towson Catholic, including a 72-48 tournament semifinal victory that knocked the Owls from the No. 1 spot and sent the Gators to the final for the first time in three years.
