TOP PERFORMERS

LaMarcus Aldridge, Texas -- He finished his first NCAA tournament game with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Kevin Pittsnogle, West Virginia -- The senior forward scored 18 points.

Clifton Lee, Northwestern State -- He made four three-pointers in the Demons' comeback.

Cameron Bennerman, N.C. State -- The senior swingman hit shots to break ties twice in the final three minutes.

SURPRISES

Northwestern State -- The 14th seed from Natchitoches, La., stormed back to knock off Big Ten tournament champion Iowa.

North Carolina State -- The 10th seed beat No. 7 Cal despite riding a four-game losing streak into the tournament. The Wolfpack's win avenged a first-round tournament loss to the Golden Bears three years ago.

Leon Powe -- Cal's super soph made only five of 13 shots, one in the second half against N.C. State's double team.

THEY SAID IT

Texas coach Rick Barnes on playing Penn's slowdown game -- "It's like going to the dentist. It's going to be a long experience. You wanted Novocain but they didn't have any."

Northwestern State's Jermaine Wallace, who completed his game-winning three-pointer on the floor past the baseline -- "I actually saw it go in through the back of the glass. I can't believe this."

Iowa coach Steve Alford, on rumors he will return to Indiana -- "We're two minutes after the game. My focus and concern hasn't changed."
