McCray opts to leave UM

March 18, 2006|By HEATHER A. DINICH

COLLEGE PARK -- Former Maryland guard Chris McCray officially withdrew from classes on Wednesday, a spokesman in the university's office of the registrar confirmed yesterday. McCray, a senior who averaged 15.2 points a game for the Terps, was declared academically ineligible at the start of the spring semester.

Maryland coach Gary Williams said yesterday that McCray was in his office Thursday and told him he was going to train in Houston with ex-Terp John Lucas. Williams said McCray left in good academic standing and plans to pursue a degree.

McCray was unavailable for comment yesterday.

McCray's absence was a severe blow to Maryland in the second half of the season, as the Terps posted a 6-8 record without him.
