Roch around the clock

The Kickoff

March 13, 2006|By ROCH KUBATKO

Yesterday, the Orioles conducted a drill on one of their back fields that provided a few laughs. Naturally, Jeff Conine and Kevin Millar were responsible.

In the drill, third base coach Tom Trebelhorn created different game situations with the bases loaded, depending on where he hit the ball. Pitchers would have to cover first base on a grounder to the right side. Outfielders would chase down singles and throw to the plate. And each time Trebelhorn made contact, the "batter" would run to first.

After spraying singles to the outfield, Trebelhorn lifted a popup to the right side of the infield with Conine serving as the hitter. Mimicking his reaction to a poor at-bat, Conine let out a scream and slammed his batting helmet to the ground with both hands as he neared first base.

"You're in midseason form," someone yelled to him.

"Hey, it's spring training," he replied. "Got to work on everything."

When Bruce Chen covered first base on one play, Millar shouted "That a boy, Chen Ho Park!"

This is a loose bunch. It's refreshing.
