West Friendship firefighters to hold benefit bingo April 1

The West Friendship Volunteer Fire Department will hold Longaberger Basket Bingo at 6 p.m. April 1 at the Sykesville-Freedom Volunteer Fire Hall on Route 32 at Freedom Avenue.

The event, which includes 20 regular games, three specials and a raffle, is to raise money for medical expenses for Pieter Lucas, a volunteer firefighter and auxiliary police officer from Glenwood who was injured Nov. 23 while directing traffic at the scene of an accident on U.S. 40 in Ellicott City.

Musical fairy tale -- The Glenelg High School drama department will present its final performance of the musical Once Upon a Mattress, based on the fairy tale The Princess and the Pea, at 2:30 p.m. today in the school auditorium. Book club -- The Glenwood library will hold a meeting of its Mother/Daughter Book Club, for daughters ages 11 and older and their mothers, at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The group will discuss A Corner of the Universe by Ann M. Martin. Refreshments will be served.

The library will offer a talk on "Trends in Kitchen Remodeling" by Jason Swiger at 7 p.m. Thursday. Registration is required.

"Try Yoga," an opportunity to learn basic postures and relaxation techniques with yoga instructor Susan Kain, will be held at 7 p.m. March 20. Participants should wear comfortable clothes and take blankets. Registration is required.

Fred Glueckstein, author of The '27 Yankees, will provide glimpses of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and other stars, and detailed accounts of events on and off the diamond at 7 p.m. March 27. Silent auction -- The West Friendship Express, a fundraiser for the West Friendship Elementary School PTA, will be at Baldwin Station Restaurant at 7 p.m. Saturday with a silent auction. Tickets are $50 and include dinner, live entertainment and the opportunity to bid on various items. The PTA hopes to purchase a jazz band drum set and classroom television sets with the proceeds. Coffee with principal -- Folly Quarter Middle School, 13500 Triadelphia Road, near Glenelg, will offer "Coffee and Conversation with Principal Carl Perkins" from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. March 23. 410-313-1506.

Basket bingo -- Lisbon Volunteer Fire Company Inc. will sponsor basket bingo at the Lisbon fire hall, 1330 Woodbine Road, at 7 p.m. March 24. Doors open at 6 p.m. Food will be sold. Tickets are $15 in advance (including one free game) and $18 at the door, if available. Tickets include 20 games and door prizes. Special and raffles are also planned.
