Youth dance at firehouse March 25

The Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department's Junior Firefighters will sponsor a Spring Fling Youth Dance, for ages 9 to 15, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. March 25 at the firehouse, 6275 Old Washington Road, Elkridge.

Trinity School plans math activities days

Trinity School in Ellicott City will hold its annual Pi (3.14) Day, when middle school math classes will meet together to discover the area of a doughnut and other quantities, and Math Madness, when the classes will participate in "Toothpick Triangles," "The Probability Grand Prix" and other mathematical activities, on Tuesday and Wednesday.

A Family Math Night for kindergarten, first and second grade pupils and their families is planned for Wednesday evening.

Around Town

English practice -- The Miller branch library, 9421 Frederick Road in Ellicott City, is offering an English Conversation Club for people speaking English as a second language from 7:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Mondays. First-time participants must register before attending a meeting. 410-313-1950.

Driver ed -- The Mount Hebron Viking Backers will offer driver education classes open to everyone. Sessions are scheduled from 2:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. weekdays, tomorrow through March 24, April 18 to May 1 and May 15-26. Driving time is scheduled after completion of the instruction period. The cost is $375, including classes and on-road training. Students must be at least 15 and have their learner's permits before taking the driving portion of the program. About Faulkner -- The Miller branch library, 9421 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, will present "Let's Talk About It: William Faulkner," a four-part series of discussions of the Nobel prize-winning author's short stories and novels with Diane Rowland, a specialist in literature of the American South. The first session will focus on selected Faulkner's short stories and will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Books will be provided at registration, which is required. 410-313- 1950.

Coffee, talk -- The Board of Education will hold a "Coffee and Conversation" session, when residents can chat informally with board members, from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at Ilchester Elementary School, 4981 Ilchester Road, Ellicott City. The meetings are held around the county, but anyone interested is welcome to attend any of the meetings. 410-313- 6682.

Teen advisers, journalists -- The Miller branch library's Teen 'Zine editorial committee is recruiting members. Future journalists, poets, cartoonists and publishers are invited to join the staff of the new quarterly print and online magazine. Members, ages 13 to 18, write and collect stories and handle editing, proofreading and artistic design. The group will meet from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. March 20 at the library, 9421 Frederick Road, Ellicott City. Registration is required. 410-313-1950.

Knitting -- Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will sponsor Quick Start Knit classes for those ages 55 and older from 10:30 a.m. to noon March 21 and 28 at Ellicott City Senior Center, 9401 Frederick Road. Participants will have an opportunity to learn casting on, the knit stitch and binding off. The cost is $25 and includes needles and yarn to make a small practice project. 410-313- 7279.

Girls' group -- The Elkridge library will offer a Girls Group, a chance for those ages 12 to 15 to unwind after school, talk about favorite books, movies and music and try a craft. Speakers will be invited to talk about things that matter to girls ages 12 to 15. The group will meet from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays, beginning March 24. Registration is requested.
