Roch around the clock

March 11, 2006|By ROCH KUBATKO

The first five batters reached against Orioles starter Kris Benson in the second inning yesterday, starting with Jason Stokes, who reached them all after homering to left-center field. Lenny Harris, Wes Helms and Reggie Abercrombie singled, and Chris Gomez committed the first of his two errors.

Helms' single came on a hit-and-run checked swing. Can't blame Benson for that one, or for Gomez's two fielding miscues. Benson threw three innings and took the loss.

The Orioles scored once in the third on a leadoff double by David Newhan, an Ed Rogers single and a Val Majewski sacrifice fly. Newhan barely beat the throw from Abercrombie in center.

Rogers had two hits, but he also got doubled off first base on a routine fly ball to left field by Jeff Conine.
