Alfred M. Francis Jr., 62, human resources chief

Alfred M. Francis Jr., retired director of human resources at Rockland Industries, died of a heart attack Sunday at his Finksburg home. He was 62.

Mr. Francis was born in Baltimore and raised in Hamilton. He was a 1961 graduate of Parkville High School and earned a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Baltimore in 1965. He earned a master's degree in business from Loyola College in 1986.

Mr. Francis taught at the Maryland Training School for Boys for several years, becoming administrative assistant of personnel at Fidelity and Deposit Co. of Maryland.

Beginning in 1971 and through the late 1980s, he held personnel or human relations positions at Frederick Memorial Hospital, CHC Corp., Alco Gravure Inc. and Martin's Caterers, and had owned and served as general manager of Employers Overload.

From 1989 until 1994, he was director of human resources at Chaselle Inc. He was corporate recruiting manager for SES Staffing Solutions from 1994 to 1996. He was human resources manager for Symphony Health Services and spent the last year of his career at Rockland Industries before retiring in 1998.

He also earned a real estate license and worked for Grempler Realty in the late 1980s.

Mr. Francis enjoyed playing golf at Willow Springs in Sykesville and collected Wizard of Oz memorabilia.

Services were Thursday.

Surviving are his wife of 24 years, the former Kathleen Beatty; a son, Alfred M. Francis III of White Marsh; a daughter, Michelle J. Winkler of Upperco; a sister, Carole Griffitts of Manchester; and four grandchildren. A previous marriage to Joan Gavin ended in divorce.
