Raleigh, N.C -- Two clutch baskets and a free throw by Daynese Stowe sparked a 13-3 run to close the game that carried the UMES women to a 51-41 win over spunky Bethune-Cookman in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference quarterfinals yesterday at the RBC Center.

The victory sends third-seeded UMES (16-12) into today's semifinals against second-seeded Delaware State.

Bethune-Cookman, the 11th seed, proved a tough out, climbing into a tie at 38 with 11:28 remaining before a combination of subpar shooting and the Lady Hawks' superior size sabotaged its second straight bid for an upset.

"They recruited me because I had a decent jump shot for a post player," said Stowe, whose first bucket made 46-41 before she converted a conventional three-point play with 1:20 left.

The Lady Wildcats managed just three points in the final 11 1/2 minutes, all on a drive and free throw by Katie Clark, who led all scorers with 20 points. "We were fortunate they only shot 29 per cent," Lady Hawks coach Fred Batchelor said. "Down the stretch, our defensive rebounding was pivotal. They got no second shots."

UMES has won 14 of its past 19 games and is in the semifinals for the first time in nine years.

All-MEAC guard Toni Kennedy (Dunbar), the leading scorer in the conference, topped a balanced UMES attack with 11 points despite missing four minutes when she experienced a leg cramp in the second half.

"I want to leave being part of a great team," the senior said. kent.baker@baltsun.com
