March 09, 2006|By SAM SESSA

The Big Hurt

Hometown -- Kent Island and Baltimore

Current members --Billy Martin, vocals, acoustic guitar and harmonica; Will Sutton, guitar; Tim Johnson, bass; Jamie Kelley, drums; Matt Costello, percussion; Frank Kanady, turntables; Bob Akins, guitar and bass

Founded in --2004

Style --A mix of rock, reggae, acid jazz, drum and bass and Go-Go

Influenced by --311, Sublime, Soul Coughing, Incubus, Bob Marley

Notable --The band's first album, Lessons, came out in October, and band members had so much material they decided to cut another record this summer. One of their coming concerts is with Long Beach Shortbus, a band derived from the surviving members of Sublime.

Quotable --"Last time Long Beach Shortbus played, they just brought the house down," Kelley said. "They're a phenomenal band. Our styles mesh pretty well because while we all draw on our Sublime influences, we've kind of branched out a little bit and brought some rock 'n' roll and some other things into it. It should be a good night. It should be a really good night."

Hear The Big Hurt on Wednesday at the Recher Theatre, 512 York Road in Towson. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $12 and $15 for those younger than 21. Call 410-337-7178 or visit For more information about the band, visit
