On March 6, 2006, GERARD "Jerry" WIRTH, passed away from complications of a stroke he suffered on Ash Wednesday. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years Theresa Gloria (nee Blair) Wirth. He is survived by four children, Gloria Anne Wardrup and husband Leo of Virginia Beach, VA, Mark Wirth and wife Joyce of Occoquan, VA and Kathleen Painter and Christopher Wirth of Annapolis, MD; four grandchildren, Capt. Christopher Lowe, USA, Mark Wirth Jr., Jennifer Painter and Kimberly Painter and one great-grandson, James Lowe. He is surviving by sisters Frieda Heinrich and Charlotte Wirth of Baltimore. The fourth of six children of the late Gustav and Anna Wirth. He was preceded by his sisters Anita and Catherine and brother Louis. LCDR Wirth proudly served 30 years of active naval service dating back to 1943. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Medals of Valor after his ship was sunk off France several days after D-Day. He later served in the Pacific Theater until the end of War World II. A Former Chief Radioman, LCDR Wirth received his commission in 1959. His tours of duty included the USS Shangri La, USS Saratoga, USS Oriskany, OIC Radioman Schools, Bainbridge, MD, Staff COMCARDIV SEVEN, OPANV Communications Officer and OIC, Radio Transmitter facility, Annapolis, MD. After his retirement, he had a 15 year career with the Civil Service Commission and OPM and resided in Annapolis until his death. Jerry Wirth was smart, articulate and full of life until the end. He was a man that was a source of strength to his family and we salute him with love, honor and gratitude at his passing.
